LUKE Hopkins and Jason Lynn picked up their first wins of the year in Thundersport’s blue riband 600 class this weekend at Brands Hatch.
While the two spend most weekends apart, Hopkins in the British championship paddock and Lynn in the Irish ranks, there was barely a fairing between them as they battled hard in a tight finish on Saturday before Lynn did the double on Sunday.
The race was already looking like it would be a flyer after Hopkins Racing’s R6 runner pipped fellow Yamaha man Lynn for his maiden pole position by a mere 0.006s, with championship runner-up Max Wadsworth less than half a second back to complete the front row.
Hopkins got the best start when the lights went out for race one while Specialised Group rider Wadsworth and Lynn tucked in behind, but it only took Lynn another two laps to move into second and begin hunting down Hopkins. The Northern Irishman found his way through on lap 13 and he looked to be holding the lead, but Hopkins got him back with three to go and held on over the line to take the win by 0.055s. Wadsworth took third ahead of Sportsman winner Andy Guy.As the skies opened on Sunday, Lynn lined up on pole under the Mega Laps system, but it was Guy who led the first lap of the soaking Indy circuit. His lead didn’t last, however, and Walter Bell Yamaha rider Lynn was into the lead with a 0.9s gap by the very next lap. From there, reigning Irish Supersport champ Lynn disappeared into the distance and stretched a margin of nearly 10 seconds at the line while Wadsworth and Guy completed the podium. North Lincs Components’ Sportsman series leader James Hind crossed the line a distant fourth in a battle of attrition where almost half the field retired, leaving just nine finished
It was a repeat podium in race three as Lynn led lights-to-flag, but Wadsworth was close in tow as he crossed the line just 0.671s back, while Guy completed his Sportsman hat-trick with another win. For Lynn, though, his results at Brands have been a while in the making.“At long last things have come together and this is a big jump in the right direction,” he said. “We really have found the sweet spot on the wee R6, but still need to improve in some areas.“Hopefully this will be the first of many wins. If it wasn’t for a missed gear in the first race, it could have been three from three.“A big thank you as always to everyone who has helped make this possible and mega thanks to everyone who has stood by me while things where not going to plan.”
